    Teaching/Research Statement

My field of research and teaching expertise is international history as well as the history of peace and conflict resolution. I am particularly interested in the history of international cultural relations since the early modern period. Methodologically, I am especially intrigued by the interplay between the theatrical, the cultural and the political in international relations.  Much of my previous work has focused on the European, North American context but more recently, my teaching and research has expanded to include Asia, notably the Far and Middle East. I am currently writing a book on the history of nation branding since 1600 while also editing a series titled “Explorations in Culture and International History” with Berghahn Books in Oxford/New York.

Courses I teach include traditional approaches to diplomatic history such as the history of international relations (lecture cycle over four semesters), the history of empires, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as the history of Japanese Foreign Relations; but also more avant-garde perspectives such as the history of international cultural relations, 1500 to the present (lecture cycle of three semesters), cultural diplomacy, the history of oceans and nation branding.  As a supervisor for M.A. and doctoral theses, I am particularly keen on cooperating with students interested in novel perspectives on the history of diplomacy and international action. Such perspectives may concern methodological approaches but also specific agents, themes, relationships or territories that have not yet been studied before.
